We are continuing to work through the Aequitas Coffee exports that our importer partner Crop to Cup has brought to the U.S. this crop cycle. Like the Sao Luiz and Edson Tamekuni we roasted earlier in the year, this microlot from Max Takiuti is grown on the plateau of Cerrado Mineiro just around 1,100 meters above sea level. This particular separation is a peaberry selection of the Mundo Novo variety – a natural cross between the Typica and Bourbon varieties that was discovered in Brazil in 1943. Peaberries are known for being a mutation where only one coffee seed develops inside the cherry fruit, instead of the usual two.

In Max’s coffee’s case, we find aromas that we expect from Brazil coffees – toasted nuts, saturated sugar, wisps of chocolate, but upon tasting it we are bowled over by fresh-pressed clementine juice, a round body and a lingering, zippy finish. Truly special and particularly seasonally appropriate for warm, summer days.
